Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries can send SMS notifications?
SMS notifications are live for stores in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Sweden. Other countries are being added over time, so check the SMS settings in your Bird app for current availability. Email notifications are available everywhere Bird works in the meantime. Note that availability depends on where your store is based, while the per-message price depends on the country your customer's number belongs to.
What SMS notifications can I send?
Bird supports SMS notifications for five customer-facing events: ready for pickup, order picked up, out for delivery, order delivered, and order edited. You can enable or disable each notification type based on your workflow. Your staff can also receive a text when a new order comes in, sent to the phone numbers configured on each location. Order confirmation is not included because Shopify already sends that natively at checkout.
How much do SMS notifications cost?
SMS is charged per message from your Bird account balance. Rates vary by country. For yearly plans, SMS charges are deducted from your prepaid balance, and messages pause if that balance runs out. For monthly plans, charges appear on your Shopify invoice.
How does SMS consent work?
Bird includes built-in consent management. Customers can opt in to SMS notifications at checkout, and only customers who have consented will receive SMS messages. There is no way to enrol a customer who has not agreed. Bird handles the consent record, though the messaging regulations that apply to your store depend on where you and your customers are located and remain your responsibility.
Which plans include SMS notifications?
SMS notifications are available on every Bird plan. You pay per message sent from your Bird account balance, so there is no separate subscription on top of your plan. To switch it on, raise your limit and top up your balance from the Subscriptions page, then turn individual notifications on or off in Bird Settings > SMS Notifications. Staff texts also need phone numbers added in Location Settings before they can send.
