The shop

Bamboo Juices presses cold juice in Atlanta. Raw, organic, nothing from concentrate, bottled the same morning it ships. Most of it goes out as same-day or next-day local delivery around the city, with pickup and shipping on top, and a steady base of cleanse subscribers who reorder every week.

Fresh juice does not wait around. A bottle pressed this morning has to reach someone on a day the team can actually press and drive for, so the delivery date is not a line at the bottom of the order. It basically is the order. Left alone, Shopify checkout never asks for it.

The problem

Bamboo had already cycled through the options. A custom-built app first, then Zapiet paired with Intuitive Shipping. Nothing held their delivery rules together without constant babysitting. So they went looking for a single app that could do all of it out of the box, the way the old custom build once did.

It was a tall order. Bamboo runs three cutoffs in a single day:

  • Before 11am, the first slot is same day, 4 to 8pm.
  • Between 11am and 3pm, it jumps to the next morning, 6 to 9am.
  • After 3pm, it rolls to the next day, 4 to 8pm.

Then layer on lead time that carries over from the day before, a minimum order that has to block checkout, a daily cap so a busy Sunday does not get oversold, and subscription orders that cannot be tagged like one-off orders. Most apps cover one or two of these. Bamboo needed the whole set working at once, on a live store taking real orders.

The fix

Bamboo runs Bird Pickup & Delivery on Shopify now, built around how the shop actually works instead of bending the shop to fit the app.

  • A date and time picker in the cart, so the delivery date and slot are chosen up front instead of guessed at checkout.
  • Time slots tied to the three daily cutoffs, with lead time carried over from the day before, so the first available slot is always one the team can fulfill.
  • Store pickup and local delivery side by side, also known as click and collect, plus regular shipping for anyone outside the delivery area.
  • Multi-location support for extended delivery, so Bamboo can switch on delivery to extra zip codes for a promotion and switch it back off later.
  • A minimum order value gate, so carts under the threshold are stopped before they reach checkout.
  • Order limits per day, so a busy delivery day stops getting oversold.
  • Order tagging that writes the delivery date onto each order and works alongside their own Shopify Flow rules, while leaving recurring subscription orders alone.

Bird live on bamboojuices.com. A shopper picks shipping, local delivery, or pickup, confirms their zip is in the delivery zone, then locks in a date and a time slot the team can fulfill.

The piece that quietly won them over was the safety net. Every so often an order used to land with no date on it, and the team would have to call the customer to sort it out after the fact. Bird added a fallback that re-asks for the date on the order status page, so those orders come through clean instead of turning into a phone call.

Shopify's own pickup and delivery is fine for the basics. The cutoff logic that carries from one day into the next is the part it cannot do, and that is the piece that put Bamboo on Bird.

What changed

These days the store runs the way the kitchen does. Customers only see dates Bamboo can actually hit. Carts that are too small or come in too late stop themselves at checkout instead of becoming someone's problem later. And the crew bottling juice at 6am is reading off the same calendar the customer saw when they paid.

Bamboo presses a full range of juices and cleanses fresh to order, then gets them out on the date the customer chose.

The other thing that mattered was support that actually answered. Bamboo leaned on Bird through every strange edge case during the cutover, usually the same day, a couple of times well past midnight. After one of those long fixes, they wrote back:

I can't tell you how much I appreciate you owning this and working to get it fixed.

Three years later, Bamboo has not gone looking again.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Shopify app does Bamboo Juices use for juice delivery and pickup?

Bamboo Juices uses Bird Pickup & Delivery, a 5.0-rated, Built for Shopify app, for store pickup, local delivery, and click and collect. It runs the cart date picker, time slots, and cutoff rules on their Shopify store.

How does Bamboo Juices handle same-day and next-day delivery cutoffs?

Bird is set up with three daily cutoff windows. Depending on whether an order comes in before 11am, between 11am and 3pm, or after 3pm, the date picker offers the first slot the team can realistically fulfill, with lead time carried over from the previous day.

Can a juice or cleanse brand offer pickup, delivery, and shipping in one Shopify checkout?

Yes. Bamboo Juices offers store pickup, local delivery, and shipping together through Bird, with time slots for pickup and delivery. Shoppers outside the local delivery area can still choose shipping at checkout.

Does Bird work with subscription orders from a subscription app?

Yes. Bird tags one-time orders with their delivery date while leaving recurring subscription orders handled separately, so the fulfillment team can always tell the two apart.
